Where to look for work - covering all the bases!
Online
Googling health and safety recruitment will bring up specialist agencies such as www.newlevelrecruitment.com where you’ll find current vacancies and other relevant information.
The industry’s trade journals Safety Health Practitioner (IOSH), Health and Safety at Work (IIRSM), British Safety Council also run online job boards www.shp-jobs.co.uk, www.healthandsafety-jobs.co.uk and www.safetymanjobs.com.
Generic job boards such as Jobcentre Plus, Jobsite, Reed, Totaljobs, CV Library and Monster will also carry jobs for Health, Safety and Environmental professionals but most don’t have a specialist sector for HS&E.
Networking websites such as www.linkedin.com and www.hsepeople.com (see Social Networking Media) also have job boards that are proving popular. The IOSH careers discussion forum on www.iosh.co.uk is also worth having a look at – they won’t allow agencies to post jobs but if you let people know that you’re looking for work, they can contact you.
Local or Specialist Companies
Have a look online at careers pages for local companies or if you have specialist experience, organisations which employ people like you. Quite often company career sections aren’t up to date, so if they’re not advertising an HS&E job don’t stop there! Send a general application online or find out who deals with HS&E recruitment and give them a call or write to them.
Hard copy
Health and Safety at Work Magazine, SHP Magazine and Safety Management magazine are great sources of jobs advertised directly by employers and also specialist agencies.
Also, keep an eye on the national press for senior level positions and on local newspapers for entry and mid level positions.
Networking
Whether you meet face to face or online, networking is an excellent way of increasing your chances of finding and getting the right job. Safety organisations such as IOSH hold regular branch meetings that give members the opportunity to meet fellow safety professionals and keep up to date on changes in the industry. On the web, the Linked In and HSE People sites are great for networking and people you know (or want to know) and also for background research into companies.
We think we’ve covered the main job sources here, but it may be that you know of other good sources that may be of help to people – if so, please let us know and we’ll include them in the next newsletter.
